Godspell took place on April 1-3, 2022 at Salesian High School featuring performers of the Salesian Players ages 15-18.
After our original production of Godspell was cancelled due to the pandemic, we knew we'd be returning to new faces and a different world. We threw away our original concept - which was set on a subway platform - to come up with something fresh. Our new idea was stripped down but brilliant - a summer camp, with stripped-down arrangements and folk-based accompaniment. Our cast, which had dwindled to nine actors by opening night, was mostly comprised of students who had never been onstage. Due to the nature of the show itself, we focused our rehearsals on stage presence and used improv games to develop each scene into a unique moment that was guided by the students' own ideas. They breathed so much life into this show, and it has become my favorite iteration of Godspell to date. The audience was just as moved as we were and raved out the performance.
